Worldwide, 130,000 instructors in tens of thousands of fitness centers offer the popular LES MILLS group fitness programs. HDD GROUP, trademark holder of LES MILLS, approached us for the online assessment and certification of the Dutch instructors. And that resulted in a challenging workout for our developers, who showed their best and most flexible side.
The challenge
For the online assessment of the Dutch instructors, HDD GROUP was looking for a virtual application to accredit participants within sixteen different programs. The judges (‘assessors’) should be able to assess (approve, disapprove, skip) the live webcam footage online. In addition, it also had to be possible to give instructions to the hundreds of participants during their workout via a personal text message.
The workout
The initial starting point was the participant matrix of our interactive online event platform Transmisión Livestreams. This matrix has been developed to show rotating webcam images of home participants and is often used in this way. For this event, the LES MILLS Quarterly Workshop Q2 on Saturday 13 May, we added a new module to our platform based on this principle:
- The Assessment screen shows four participants at a time. For each assessor this is a different quartet of participants.
- The image is provided with four buttons per participant: two to approve or reject the live webcam images, a third to suspend judgment for a while and a last one to provide (textual) feedback to the participant.
- When using one of the first three buttons, the image is refreshed and a new participant to be reviewed appears automatically. Participants that have already been assessed are no longer shown in any of review screens.
- The assessment and the feedback are logged in the system and form part of the report. In addition, data is synchronized with Microsoft Dynamics via a link developed by us.
Prior to the event, the tool was extensively tested, both by us internally and by the client.
The Quarterly Workshop
During the Quarterly Workshop on May 13, we were present with our two sportiest specialists on location in Sports Complex Merwestein in Nieuwegein. These amigos manned the technical helpdesk for the online participants, took care of the switches within the platform, instructed the online assessors on location and were the point of contact for the AV specialist.
One of the focus points for LES MILLS is EXPERIENCE, and that was reflected well through the technically very stable platform!

Two simultaneous streams were broadcast from two halls. Via a personal participation link, the online participants automatically reached the correct program component (there were sixteen components, as mentioned). In the platform they saw the transactions of the physically present participants. At the same time, they showed their sporting skills remotely with a webcam switched on. These activities were judged online by the judges present in the studio.
Specific wishes for successful events
The hybrid Quarterly Workshop was extremely successful on all fronts. The Assessment module developed within Transmisión Livestreams especially for LES MILLS shows that with our applications we offer plenty of room for specific wishes that go beyond the standard application: custom links, but also slightly different ways of using existing modules.
